While my site is mostly about hitting trails and using Linux, I wanted to make a list of resources for Terre Haute. I believe it could be a great city: a clean, inviting, safe place to raise a family. A city with secure work. A city where its residents are happy and healthy. A place with outdoor recreation and opportunities.
Food Assistance
- Catholic Charities Food Bank | Facebook | 1801 Poplar St | Catholic Charities offers food assistance along with a shelter (Bethany House), preschool (Ryves Hall), and soup kitchen (Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen).
- Lighthouse Mission | 1201 S 13th St | Lodging, food service, counseling, and ministry available.
Green Living
- ReThink Inc | Facebook | 608 N 13th St | ReThink offers composting and recycling plus a zero waste shop.
- Society of Trash Baggers
- Terre Foods Cooperative Market | Like Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme but member owned and locally operated. Terre Foods still needs more members and a suitable location for a store.
- The Pickery | Facebook | 3279 E Margaret | The Pickery is here for one big reason: its organic. Pick your own produce, join their CSA, or buy from them at the Farmers’ Market.
Healthcare
- Valley Professionals Community Health Center | Valley Pro offers a sliding scale fee to help with healthcare costs. Clinics are located in Montgomery, Parke, Vermillion, and Vigo counties.
- Wabash Valley Health Center | 1436 Locust Ave | Formerly known as St. Ann’s, WVHC has a sliding scale fee with medical and dental services available. Currently undergoing expansion.
Homeless Shelters
- Bethany House | 1402 Locust St | Available to women, women with children, and married couples.
- Lighthouse Mission | 1201 S 13th St | Lodging, food service, counseling, and ministry available.
Recycling
- ISU Recycling Center | Facebook | 447 N 9th St | The ISU Recycling Center is great because it accepts glass and e-waste. Recycling must be sorted. Temporarily Closed due to COVID-19.
- West Terre Haute | 500 National Ave, West TH | A couple of mixed recycling dumpsters are located next to the Police/Water Department building.
- Vigo County Solid Waste District | 3230 E Haythorne Ave | Located next to the Vigo County Highway Department. There is a large Republic dumpster for mixed recycling. Make sure plastics are clean and dry. Break down cardboard. There are also two green recycling dumpsters located on the northwest corner (1st and Cherry) of the courthouse parking lot.
Volunteering
